The Oriental Cocktail

Oriental Cocktail

First the formal introductions…

  • 2 oz. Rye Whiskey
  • 1/2 oz. Cointreau
  • 1 oz. Sweet Vermouth
  • 1/2 oz. Lime Juice

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Last night B and I enjoyed this one again for the first time in a long while. I have to admit I had forgotten how much I like the Oriental. This (right after the Manhattan) might be my favorite. If not, it’s definitely a highly enjoyable tipple. The blend of the citrus and the rye with the herbal complexity of the vermouth provide the magic and make for a great cocktail.

The recipe is from Esquire Drinks by the cocktail historian David Wondrich.

  2. Whoa… I think I could actually make one of these tonight! Not sure about the rye, but we might have a little airplane bottle of it in the cabinet. If I do find some I will report back in the morning. 🙂
